The nuances of representing a lottery pick are far different than the nuances of representing a second round pick or undrafted player - and an agent must possess the skill, expertise, and experience to navigate all possible career paths with equal competence and proficiency.

While the negotiation of first round contracts is dictated by a rigid, collectively bargained salary scale based upon where in the first round a player is drafted, the negotiation of second round contracts is completely open-ended. That means that there is much more room for agents to capitalize on creative and innovative negotiating tactics in order to secure the most valuable and advantageous contracts for their second round and undrafted clients.
