Garrett Temple’s phone buzzed sometime Thursday night.
It was a text message from the first-year Grizzly’s coach, J.B. Bickerstaff. The message was short, sweet and to the point.
“We need competitive leadership from you tomorrow night,” it read.
“I got you, coach,” Temple texted back.
How right he was. Memphis, in desperate need of a bounce-back showing after coming up woefully short in its season opener versus the Pacers, came out guns blazing against the Hawks at FedExForum. The Grizzlies, led by Temple’s 30-point performance, established a new franchise record for first-half points (77) and wound up beating Atlanta 131-117.
